What actually works offline
Reading things. Signs, menus, ticket machines, station boards, forms, product labels, prescription instructions, parking rules. Photograph it and ask. A vision-capable model reads printed text reliably, and the image never leaves the phone — which also means no roaming data is consumed.
This is the single most useful travel case, because it is the one that happens twenty times a day.
Understanding rather than translating. Maps and navigation. Use a proper offline maps app. A language model is not a navigation system.
Bookings. No connection, no transaction.
Currency conversion at today’s rate. It can do the arithmetic if you supply the rate. It doesn’t know the rate.
Very recent local knowledge. A restaurant that opened last year may not exist as far as the model is concerned.
The rule: use it for language, explanation, and thinking. Use dedicated tools for facts that change.
Setting up before you go
Do this at home on Wi-Fi, not at the airport.

The privacy angle, which is sharper abroad
Travel data is unusually revealing: where you are, when, with whom, and why. A record of “how do I say my wife is diabetic,” “what does this prescription mean,” “translate this police form,” and “how do I report a theft” describes a trip in considerable detail.
Abroad, that record also crosses jurisdictions. Data processed on servers in one country, about your movements in another, under terms written for a third — with legal protections that vary considerably and are hard to establish from a hotel room.
On-device processing avoids the question entirely. The photograph of the pharmacy label is analysed in your phone’s memory and discarded. The GPS coordinates embedded in that photo are stripped locally before the model sees the file. Nothing crosses a border because nothing leaves the device.
There’s also a mundane benefit: no roaming data. Every one of those twenty daily lookups costs zero megabytes.
Practical habits
Screenshot before you lose signal. If you find something useful online, capture it — the model can read a screenshot offline.
One project, one trip. Keeps context together and stops your travel questions mixing with everything else.
Ask for short answers. Add “keep it under 50 words” to the system prompt. Reading long text on a street corner is miserable.
Use voice input. On-device speech recognition means you can ask without stopping to type — useful when your hands are full of luggage.
Don’t trust a number you can’t verify. Times, prices, and rules should be checked against a sign or a person.
